Building Together on the NEAR Protocol

TL;DR

  • Cooperation in key to build within the NEAR Protocol ecosystem
  • Insights on: Network decentralization, developer support, community & DAO
  • A thanks to everyone who has contributed to Meta Pool’s successful launch

Web3 is a Team Sport

Time flies, it’s been 17 months since we launched on mainnet and today we are leading in one of the main DeFi protocols. I would like to share some insights about how important cooperation is for anyone building on top of the NEAR Protocol. Building on Web3 is a team sport. You need a village in order to make things come together to deliver a DApp to mainnet. We are building together on the Near Protocol.

Coming from traditional SaaS backgrounds we tend to trivialize delivering products or solutions on a blockchain protocol such as NEAR. The ease of building is much appreciated and sometimes taken for granted. So kudos to the NEAR core team and Pagoda that keep on building the infrastructure necessary for Liquid Staking platforms such as Meta Pool to thrive on a Proof of Stake blockchain.

Decentralization of the Network

One of the main points of building a Liquid Staking solution on NEAR Protocol was to help it become more decentralized and censorship resistant. It is imperative to have blockchain technology that lives up to its core principle – a decentralized protocol.

So when we decided to build on NEAR, both Lucio and myself participated in Stake Wars to understand how the network would work, and which role node operators play in helping the PoS protocol become decentralized. This is how I met Open Shards Alliance and Blaze who were leading the Stake Wars initiative. Since then we have been pushing together in the mission of decentralizing the NEAR Protocol network.

The community of node operators is steadily working towards the goal of the NEAR decentralization strategy. It’s not something that is built overnight and believe me, it’s no trivial work running a validator node. With Stake Wars III delegation now being distributed to chunk only producer nodes, we are helping drive decentralization through community initiatives. This is made possible with the help from Pagoda and other Liquid Staking platform providers.

Developer Support

We are still at a very early stage in the building of what is possible with crypto and decentralized technology. When you start developing, having the right support is crucial. Your development team needs to rely on other peers in the ecosystem to help each other understand where the boundaries are, and more importantly where to push them.

Support is vital, and this is where Pagoda and NEAR Foundation help new builders come into the NEARverse and thrive. Also initiatives such as Banyan Collective allow Web2 developers to participate in Hacker Houses around the US. Also Open Web Academy is doing a great job hosting hackathons in Latin America.

The NEAR Digital Collective, Developer DAO and different working groups are being launched by the NEAR community. We are starting to work with the DeFi Working Group to address some of the important issues that we need to bring to Pagoda in order to support further development on the NEAR platform.

Community and DAO

From the start Lucio’s vision was to create a Liquid Staking protocol that could operate directly on a DAO. So after launch we supported the Sputnik V2 SDK. Through ASTRO DAO we backed the new version for how decentralized autonomous organizations could operate in the NEARverse.

DAOs are a very important part of what crypto brings to online communities, as they offer the opportunity to develop self sovereign platforms where users can have direct access to the value created by the platform. We believe this will unlock great value for communities in developing countries such as Argentina and Mexico which is where the Meta Pool project is being developed.

Growing together

On behalf of our team, I want to thank all the ecosystem partners, institutions and individuals that have contributed directly or indirectly to the successful launch of Meta Pool, Meta Yield and Meta Staking Vote. Without your support, none of this would have been possible. So, a huge GRACIAS TOTALES to Sherif, Kendall, Bowen, Alejandro, Roberto, Rune, Henry, Pablo, Alan, Christian, Kevin, Ashwin, Haseeb, Yang, Tom, Sal, Dwayne, Sasha, Cameron, Lyuben, Benz, Jane, Evgeny, Rim and everyone that has supported us during this beginning of our journey.

We look forward to keeping on growing in this amazing ecosystem with you.

About Meta Pool & stNEAR

Meta Pool is the leading liquid staking solution for $NEAR and wNEAR token holders. With Meta Pool you earn NEAR staking rewards and maintain your liquidity to participate in DeFi protocols on NEAR and Aurora.

Users staking $NEAR and wNEAR with Meta Pool receive in exchange stNEAR (staked NEAR) tokens.

stNEAR simultaneously accrues staking rewards and unlocks users’ liquidity enabling them to participate in DeFi activities (e.g. lending, farming, borrowing) on NEAR and Aurora.

Meta Pool also solves the problems associated with Proof-of-Stake networks staking: illiquidity, immovability and accessibility. Meta Pool also aims to distribute staking in multiple validators to improve censorship-resistance of the NEAR network.

With a TVL of ~9 Million $NEAR and growing, Meta Pool has become in just a few months a cornerstone element of the NEAR ecosystem. Meta Pool is making NEAR Protocol more decentralized and therefore more secure.

In February 2022 Meta Pool has been successfully audited by BlockSec, confirming the implementation of the highest security standards.
